Once upon a time they
lived wherever there was forest - and that was almost all over Europe. By
cutting down the forest, the animals were pushed back further and further. Even
in the Middle Ages, the bears' habitat was limited to the mountains, which were
difficult to access and still rich in forest. The best European bear areas are
steep, often rocky, large forests; people rarely come here.
Fat salmon is a
great diet for bears preparing for winter. This is why every year in western
Canada and Alaska you can see an unusual spectacle: From June to November,
grizzly bears go to the rivers to catch salmon.
