Description
WILDCRETE 3D Chicken Trio
The chicken bird (Numididae), which is native exclusively to Africa, inhabits both savannahs and forests. It averages about 45 cm in size and weighs one kilogram. Its strong beak helps it dig for food in the ground. Its clawed feet serve the same purpose.
The insect- and seed-eating, ground-nesting birds of this family resemble partridges, but with featherless heads. However, both members of the genus ‘Guttera’ have a distinctive black crest, and the vulture guinea fowl has a brown, downy patch on the back of its neck.
Most guinea fowl species have dark grey to black plumage with dense white spots, but both members of the genus Agelastes lack these spots. While several species are relatively well known, the crested guinea fowl and the two members of the genus Agelastes remain relatively unexplored.
Female guinea fowl weigh more than males, possibly due to the larger reproductive organs of females compared to male guinea fowl. The relatively larger clutches of dual-purpose hens may also be a factor contributing to their higher body weight.
