Description
WILDCRETE 3D Guinea Fowl
Guinea fowl are birds belonging to the Numididae family in the Galliformes order. They are endemic to Africa and are among the oldest galliform birds. Phylogenetically, they split from the core Galliformes after the Cracidae and before the Odontophoridae (New World quails). A fossil lineage from the Eocene, Telecrex, is associated with guinea fowl; Telecrex lived in Mongolia and may have given rise to the oldest phasianids, such as blood pheasants and ear pheasants, which evolved into species adapted to high mountain environments when the Tibetan Plateau rose. While modern guinea fowl species are endemic to Africa, the helmeted guinea fowl was introduced elsewhere as a domestic bird.
The average size is about 45 cm with a weight of one kilogram. The strong beak serves as an aid in digging for food in the ground. The clawed feet serve the same purpose.
