Description
WILDCRETE 3D Vulture (pair)
A vulture is a bird of prey that feeds on carrion. There are 23 species of vultures still in existence (including condors). Old World vultures comprise 16 living species native to Europe, Africa and Asia; New World vultures are restricted to North and South America and consist of seven known species, all belonging to the Cathartidae family.
A characteristic feature of many vultures is their bald head, which is free of feathers. It is believed that this bare skin helps to keep the head clean while feeding and plays an important role in heat regulation. Vultures have been observed huddling together and tucking their heads in when it is cold, while opening their wings and stretching their necks when it is hot. They also urinate on themselves to cool their bodies.
A group of vultures in flight is called a ‘kettle,’ while the term ‘committee’ describes a group of vultures resting on the ground or in trees. A group of vultures feeding is called a ‘wake.’
