Zebras are African horses with characteristic black and white stripes. Zebras share the genus ‘Equus’ with horses and donkeys, with these three groups being the only surviving members of the horse family (‘Equidae’). The stripe patterns of zebras vary and are unique to each individual. Several theories have been proposed for the function of the stripes, with most evidence suggesting that they serve as protection against biting flies. Zebras live in eastern and southern Africa and inhabit a variety of habitats such as savannahs, grasslands, forests, bushlands and mountainous regions.
